Hall of Fame Strength Coach

Boyd Epley presently serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning at Nebraska. Epley oversees the Husker Power Strength and Conditioning Department. When hired by former Athletic Director Bob Devaney in 1969, Nebraska became the first university to have a paid strength coach. Epley was Devaney’s only Head Strength Coach then worked under Tom Osborne for 25 years as his only Head Strength Coach. After 35 years Epley moved into an associate athletic director position to oversee the design and construction of the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex and Hawks Championship Center.

He retired from NU in 2006 then served eight years in Colorado Springs with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the organization he founded in 1978. For his national contribution in strength and conditioning, Epley was named a 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award winner by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Epley won the first National Strength Coach-of-the-Year Award in 1980, and in 1993 he was presented the NSCA’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2009 the NSCA Board of Directors changed the name of the award to the Boyd Epley Award for Lifetime Achievement. Epley was named to the U.S. Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in June 2003.

He was also honored on the March 2001 cover of American Football Monthly magazine, which tabbed him, “the Godfather of Strength and Conditioning”. Lindy’s magazine recognized Epley as one of its Top 100 Most Important College Football Sports Figures of the Century.

The Path to Athletic Power is the Nebraska strength and conditioning program for the Huskers 1969-2004. Every player that attended four or more years went to four bowl games and won at least one Championship Ring.

Building Linemen focuses on building muscle mass. Even though he includes facts and stories about some of the forty-eight All-American linemen he was privileged to work with, this book will help any athlete gain strength and become better conditioned.

“Epley is arguably the single most important individual in the history of strength and conditioning in college athletics.”
